                      Boys State Newsletter:

Letter from Kevin Kral, 2010 Boys Nation Senator

Thank you of your interest in Kentucky Boys State, a premier leadership and civic course for high school juniors going into their senior year.  We encourage students to submit their applications by May 1st due to funding from American Legion Posts, but we have a rolling admission policy up to the start date of the program.

The American Legion Boys State programs are among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for high school students. It is a participatory program where each participant becomes a part of the operation of his local, county and state government.  Students get to network with others across the State to include officials, staff, and other guests and alumni.  This program is a positive resume entry that can help with grants, scholarships, military scholarships, internships, and other competitive programs and college.

Boys State has been a program of The American Legion since 1935 when it organized to counter the Fascist inspired Young Pioneer Camps. The program was the idea of two Illinois Legionnaires, Hayes Kennedy and Harold Card, who organized the first Boys State at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield.  Kentucky Boys State was established in 1940.

At American Legion Boys State, participants are exposed to the rights and privileges, the duties and the responsibilities of a franchised citizen. The training is objective and practical with city, county and state governments operated by the students elected to the various offices. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, chorus and recreational programs. There are courses within the program such as history, political science, communication, organizational leadership, and movie studies.

High school juniors are selected by local American Legion Posts or the Executive Director to attend the program. In most cases, expenses associated with attending this program are paid by a sponsoring American Legion Post, a local business, parent or another community-based organization.  Students can directly submit to the Executive Director of Boys State given sponsorship by Posts are not always possible or funding limited in some areas.  While selection is competitive, we encourage all students to apply with the application and a letter of support from a person of importance like a teacher, principal, counselor, religious leader, civic leader or military personnel.  Please contact the Executive Director if you have any questions or concerns at the below contact number.

American Legion Boys State is currently conducted in 49 Departments of The American Legion. Hawaii does not conduct a program. As separate corporations, Boys States vary in content and method of procedure, but each and every Boys State adheres to the basic concept of the program - that of teaching government from the township to the state level.

The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors a similar program for young ladies called Girls State.   For more information about Girls State review their brochure:

For information concerning Kentucky Boys State or Kentucky Girls State, please go the YOUTH PROGRAMS page on this site and complete the sign up form.  A program chairman will contact you shortly.  Kentucky Boys State 2015 will be held June 7-12, at the Wendell H. Ford Regional Training Center, Greenville, KY.  There is limited bussing from locations in Kentucky that are communicated to those selected to attend the program.  We encourage students to car pool and have alternative transportation just in case!

The fee for attending Boys State is $200, which is usually covered by the Post sponsoring the young man OR local businesses.  Parents are also able to pay for the program, but rarely do if money is requested by one of the sources.  All monies need to be sent via check in the name of Kentucky Boys State.  See brochure for more information.
