The John Keys Scholarship is sponsored by the Kentucky Sons of The American Legion. The Scholarship Fund was established in 1988 by action of the Kentucky S.A.L. Annual Detachment Convention. In October 2005, the Detachment Executive Committee assigned the administration and management of the John Keys S.A.L. Scholarship Fund to Independence Squadron 275 in Independence, Kentucky.  Over the last ten years, the John Keys Scholarship Fund has awarded a total more than $6,600 in scholarships to 23 students across Kentucky.  Scholarship awards are funded by contributions from members of the Sons of The American Legion, The American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the public at large in Kentucky.  Over the last ten years, more than $12,000 has been raised for the Fund.

 

ABOUT JOHN KEYS

 

John H. Keys (1923-1990) was born and raised in Covington, Kentucky. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and became a member of The American Legion, Latonia Post 203 after his discharge. John was eligible for membership in the Sons through his father, a World War I veteran. John held a number of high profile leadership positions within the Sons of The American Legion (S.A.L.) including, Kentucky Detachment Commander 1983-1985, National Executive Committeeman 1976-1983/1985-1986, 1988 National Convention Chairman and National Vice Commander-South 1981-1982.  John Keys died of cancer in February 1990. At its 1990 State Convention, the Kentucky S.A.L. voted to rename the Scholarship Fund in his honor, in tribute to his untiring devotion and years of service to The American Legion Family.

 

Who Can Apply?

·         An honorably discharged veteran of the United States Armed Forces, without consideration for period or length of service, who is a legal resident of the Commonwealth of Kentucky;    OR

A member of any Kentucky Squadron of the Sons of The American Legion whose membership dues for the current membership year are paid in full.

 

Other Requirements:

·         Applicants must be attending any post-secondary school (public or private) in Kentucky or in any bordering state.  Scholarship awards are solely for tuition at the applicant’s institution.  

 

·         Applications are accepted on a continuous basis. Scholarships will be awarded on May 1st and November 1st each year.  Applications are reviewed by a Scholarship Review Committee that will recommend applicants for awards.  Scholarship applications must be mailed to the following address:

Jason Foster Kentucky S.A.L. Relief Fund

The Jason Foster Kentucky S.A.L. Relief Fund was established by action of the 31st Annual Detachment Convention in 2002 to provide financial assistance to members of the Kentucky Sons of The American Legion for medical and family expenses due to medical emergencies. The amount of individual grants is determined by the contributions received during a program year.  The operation and management of the Relief Fund is the responsibility of Kinne-Slaven Squadron 115 in Stearns, Kentucky.

 

ABOUT JASON FOSTER

Jason Foster was born in 1977 in Somerset, Kentucky, the son of a Vietnam Veteran and Legionnaire. At age 11, Jason was diagnosed with a progressive, degenerative neuro-muscular disease. By age 18, he was wheelchair bound, and at age 25 had developed congestive heart failure. He lives life to its fullest despite his frequent hospitalization, and continues to be an inspiration to everyone he meets.

 

Who Can Apply?

A member of any Kentucky Squadron of the Sons of The American Legion whose membership dues for the current membership year are paid in full.

 

Other Requirements:

Applications must include a true copy of the applicant’s current year S.A.L. membership card, as well as a statement from the applicant’s licensed physician, and documentation of medical and family expenses resulting from the medical emergency.
